"To truly reap the benefits fo a French language education, it is important to consider and to take advantage of the opportunities to continue to learn and to use French both in the classroom and beyond"

Claudette Tardif, Senator

French for Life

French for Life was created in response to the federal government's Action Plan for Official Languages. One of the goals of the plan is to consolidate and improve the quality of existing second language instruction programs, and increase the proportion of graduates at the secondary level with a working knowledge of their second language.

French for Life is facilitated by Canadian Parents for French-MB (CPF-MB), in partnership with Manitoba Association of Teachers of French (MATF/AMPF) and L’Association manitobaine des directrices et directeurs d’immersion française (AMDI). The project serves to promote French Second Language (FSL) education in general, and has a focus on the benefits of French Immersion and Basic French programs.

It targets those groups, which do not have French as a first language, but can however, significantly impact on the continuance and expansion of the use and appreciation of the French language and culture within the province of Manitoba.

French for Life addresses current areas of concern in Manitoba such as:
1) Lack of standing of Basic French as a worthwhile, credible and valuable subject option
2) Complacency regarding French Immersion programs
3) Attrition in all French Second Language (FSL) programs
4) Negative perception of FSL teaching as a viable career option

French for Life addresses the important issue of maintaining, improving and expanding FSL learning in the province of Manitoba. The project assists by addressing the need to:
- Increase the visibility of FSL programs
- Increase enrollment and encourage retention in FSL programs
- Improve communication with FSL stakeholders
- Provide teachers with the necessary tools to offer and supply effective and challenging FSL programs
- Encourage students to continue their studies in French at the post-secondary level
